When a city hosts one of the world’s biggest sporting events, the spotlight reaches far beyond the stadium. International tournaments have become opportunities to celebrate local culture, showcase creativity, and give visitors a deeper sense of place. As fans from around the world gather in Canada for the FIFA World Cup, a group of Ottawa artists is helping introduce Canadian identity through a uniquely creative public art project.

The Great Beaver Quest is a free public art scavenger hunt taking place throughout Toronto’s historic Old Town neighbourhood. The installation features 51 hand painted beaver sculptures, each representing one of the countries competing in the tournament, along with several special designs celebrating Canada and the spirit of the World Cup. Together, the sculptures transform the neighbourhood into an interactive outdoor gallery that encourages visitors to explore the city while experiencing artwork inspired by cultures from across the globe.

Several Ottawa artists were selected to contribute to the project, giving the nation’s capital a place in one of the country’s largest cultural celebrations surrounding the World Cup. Their work joins pieces created by artists from across Canada, each bringing a distinctive artistic style and interpretation to the countries they were chosen to represent. The collection reflects not only the diversity of the tournament itself, but also the depth of Canada’s creative community.

Public art has the ability to connect people in ways that traditional attractions often cannot. Rather than simply walking from one destination to another, visitors are encouraged to slow down, discover new neighbourhoods, and engage with artwork that celebrates culture, storytelling, and shared experiences. The Great Beaver Quest transforms Toronto into more than a host city. It becomes a place where sport and art come together to create lasting memories.

For Ottawa’s artists, the opportunity extends well beyond exhibiting their work. With hundreds of thousands of visitors expected during the tournament, the installation provides international exposure while highlighting the talent that exists within Canada’s capital. It is a reminder that major sporting events are not only about the athletes competing on the field, but also about the communities and creators who help define the host country’s identity.

When the tournament comes to an end, the goals and championship moments will be remembered, but so too will the experiences that happened away from the matches. Projects like The Great Beaver Quest give visitors another reason to explore, connect, and appreciate Canadian creativity. For Ottawa’s artists, it is an opportunity to represent their city on a global stage while sharing a small piece of Canada’s artistic spirit with the world.
