Ottawa’s festival season just received a major boost. Eight of the city’s biggest events have been selected as recipients of the Major Festivals Fund, a new investment designed to help Ottawa’s most prominent festivals continue attracting visitors and delivering large-scale experiences throughout the year.
The fund, launched by Ottawa Tourism in partnership with the City of Ottawa, will distribute $1 million in funding annually to support major festivals that play a key role in the city’s tourism and cultural economy. The initiative focuses on events that draw visitors from outside the region and create meaningful economic impact through travel, overnight stays and large audiences.
Among the eight festivals selected are some of the capital’s most recognizable events: Capital Pride, CityFolk Festival, Escapade Music Festival, RBC Ottawa Bluesfest, the Ottawa International Animation Festival, the Ottawa Jazz Festival, Saunders Farm FrightFest, and Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend.
Each of these events brings its own energy to the city’s calendar. Summer staples like Ottawa Bluesfest, one of the largest music festivals in North America, attract massive crowds each year with major international artists and multi day programming. Meanwhile, the Ottawa Jazz Festival has been celebrating jazz and live music in the capital since 1980, drawing hundreds of thousands of attendees with performances from Canadian and global talent.
Other events highlight Ottawa’s diverse cultural scene. Capital Pride celebrates the city’s LGBTQ+ community, while the Ottawa International Animation Festival, recognized as the largest and oldest animation festival in North America, brings filmmakers, artists and fans from around the world to the capital each year.
According to Ottawa Tourism, these festivals play a much larger role than entertainment alone. They help strengthen the city’s reputation as a vibrant destination while also contributing to the local economy and supporting tourism growth.
City leaders say investing in these events is about supporting experiences that bring people together while encouraging visitors to explore Ottawa throughout the year. Festivals not only showcase the city’s creativity and culture, but also create moments that keep residents and tourists coming back.
With the Major Festivals Fund now in place, organizers will have additional support to expand programming, enhance operations and continue delivering the large-scale events that have become part of Ottawa’s identity. And for festival-goers, it’s another sign that the city’s vibrant event scene is only continuing to grow.
