Offensive Outpouring Leads Sens Past Habs 6-3

Offensive Outpouring Leads Sens Past Habs 6-3

The Sens offense came to play for Hockey Night in Canada. They scored five times on Carey Price and once more on an empty net to move to 4-1-3 in their last eight games.

It didn’t take long for the excitement to begin. Just 28 seconds in Brendan Gallagher caught Josh Norris with a high stick, earning himself a double minor. Brady Tkachuk quickly capitalized on the opportunity, scoring in close on Carey Price 14 seconds into the power play. Three minutes later the Sens would find themselves on the penalty kill after Braydon Coburn caught Corey Perry up high. Tyler Toffoli would score the equalizer for the Habs on the power play with a one-timed rocket over the shoulder of Anton Forsberg.

The Sens would get the last laugh in the period when they found themselves short-handed once again. With eight minutes to go in the frame Connor Brown cleaned up the Nick Paul rebound to score short-handed and give Ottawa the lead heading into the first intermission.

Josh Anderson would tie the game seven minutes into the second with a top corner snipe on Forsberg, but the Sens would answer right back. Less than a minute later Evgenii Dadonov had a beautiful tip on a Chabot point shot, redirecting it right past Price. With four minutes left in the period it would be Dadonov again who extended the Sens lead. This time receiving a pass in front from Artem Anisimov and sliding it five hole on Price. Not to be outdone, Anderson would answer back with a minute left, cutting the lead back to one heading into the second intermission.

Anisimov would cap off his three point night by bringing the lead back to two only three minutes into the third period. A bad giveaway by Montreal led to an unexpected shot from the slot that Price couldn’t stop. Ottawa would find themselves short-handed once more with five minutes to go in the game after a Zaitsev trip. Despite some relentless pressure from Montreal, Forsberg and the Sens stood tall and shut the door the rest of the way. Batherson would get his 12th of the year by adding an empty netter for a final score of 6-3.

The win continues a streak of highly competitive play from the Sens. Ottawa is 4-1-3 in their last eight games, with their only regulation loss coming after a week break. If the Sens can continue this run of good form it could have a serious impact on how the North Division playoff picture turns out. But regardless of how this season plays out, with young and exciting prospects making the jump from the NCAA to end the year, there’s much cause for optimism in Canada’s capital.
