If you haven’t visited Sparks Street lately, now is the perfect time to take another walk through one of Ottawa’s most historic downtown destinations. A striking new public art installation has transformed the pedestrian corridor into an open-air gallery, giving locals and visitors a colourful new reason to explore the city’s core.
Known as Canadiana Block, the installation features 13 large-scale murals inspired by each of Canada’s 10 provinces and three territories. Stretching along the centre of Sparks Street between Kent and Lyon Streets, the vibrant artwork celebrates the country’s diverse natural landscapes while bringing new energy to one of Ottawa’s most recognizable streets.
Each mural showcases the beauty and character of a different region of Canada, from rugged Atlantic coastlines and towering Rocky Mountains to expansive prairie landscapes, northern tundra, dense forests, and pristine lakes. Together, the murals create an immersive experience that encourages visitors to slow down, explore, and appreciate the incredible diversity of Canada’s geography, all without leaving downtown Ottawa.
The project was designed by Canadian artists Dan Bergeron and Gabriel Specter, whose winning concept, Coast to Coast to Coast, was selected after a nationwide competition that attracted 28 submissions from professional artists across the country. Their vision transforms an ordinary pedestrian walkway into a destination where public art, storytelling, and Canadian identity come together in a uniquely interactive way.
Sparks Street was chosen for the installation because of its unique location in the heart of downtown. Just steps from Parliament Hill and serving as a key pedestrian connection between LeBreton Flats and the new Ādisōke Library, the street welcomes thousands of residents, office workers, and tourists throughout the year. The murals add another layer to the neighbourhood, making an already popular destination even more inviting for those looking to spend an afternoon exploring the city.
The Canadiana Block is part of the City of Ottawa’s ongoing effort to enhance public spaces through art, placemaking, and cultural experiences. By transforming everyday spaces into destinations, projects like this encourage people to spend more time downtown while supporting nearby restaurants, cafés, shops, and local businesses. Public art has become an increasingly important part of creating vibrant, walkable communities, and this installation is one of Ottawa’s most ambitious examples to date.
The murals are expected to remain in place until August 2027, giving residents and visitors more than a year to experience the installation. Whether you’re planning a lunch break downtown, meeting friends on a patio, visiting Parliament Hill, or simply looking for your next photo-worthy walk, Canadiana Block is well worth adding to your summer itinerary.
Sometimes the best way to rediscover Ottawa is simply by exploring it on foot. With its newest collection of public art now complete, Sparks Street offers another reminder that the capital continues to evolve, one colourful mural at a time.
