What’s Changing
The higher limit is now in effect on Highway 417 heading west from the Highway 416/417 interchange toward Highway 7, and on the stretch running from Leitrim Road east to Highway 174. Highway 416 also gets the bump, with the new 110 km/h limit applying from Fallowfield Road up to just south of the 416/417 interchange.
Part of a Bigger Provincial Push
This isn’t a one-off change for the capital. It’s the latest step in Ontario’s broader rollout of 110 km/h limits across the provincial highway system, a plan that began back in June with more updates already scheduled for August 31.
The province has said that much of Ontario’s freeway network was actually built to safely handle speeds up to 110 km/h in the first place, which is part of the reasoning behind the expansion.
Why It Matters for Your Drive
For anyone who regularly makes the trip between Ottawa and Toronto, the province estimates the wider rollout could shave close to half an hour off that drive once fully in place. By the end of September, officials expect roughly 89 percent of Ontario’s highway network to be posted at 110 km/h.
What to Know Before You Go
If you’re planning a highway trip in or out of Ottawa this fall, it’s worth keeping an eye on posted signage since not every stretch has changed yet, and more updates are still rolling out through the season. As always, the posted limit is the speed to follow, whether that’s the new 110 or a lower limit in a section that hasn’t changed.
