Before reaching out to CPI Interiors, these homeowners had already transformed their backyard into a beautiful outdoor retreat where family and friends naturally gathered.
Inside, however, the home felt disconnected from that lifestyle. The interiors were dark and dated, the staircase felt heavy, and the kitchen was closed off from the rest of the main floor. For a family that enjoys cooking together and entertaining, the layout simply wasn’t working.
They wanted a home that felt brighter, more connected, and better suited to gathering.
Creating a More Connected Home
From the first walkthrough, CPI Interiors recognized that the renovation would require more than replacing finishes.
Early in the design process, the team confirmed that the walls between the foyer and dining room and between the kitchen and dining space could be removed.
Opening the floor plan allowed natural light from the large patio doors to travel throughout the main floor while creating a stronger connection between the interior and backyard. Continuous flooring helped unify the newly opened spaces, while structural beams clad in white oak became architectural features.
The Kitchen Becomes the Heart of the Home
At the centre of the renovation was a completely reimagined kitchen.
The original peninsula created a bottleneck and made it difficult for multiple people to use the space. CPI Interiors replaced it with a large island that became a natural gathering place for family and friends.
Custom pantry storage was added on either side of the refrigerator, corner drawers made use of awkward spaces, and a dedicated coffee and microwave station with floating shelves added convenience. White oak was also carried onto the support post between the cabinetry, tying it into the surrounding beams.
The result is a kitchen where family members can cook together and guests can remain part of the conversation.
Designing for Everyday Life
The staircase retained its original shape but was updated with white oak treads, white risers and black spindles, connecting with the engineered white oak flooring throughout the main and second levels.
In the mudroom and laundry room, custom cabinetry, a built-in bench and hooks added practical storage, while shiplap walls brought texture and durability.
The main bathroom was redesigned to improve storage and features textured blue shower tile against the home’s neutral palette. In the powder room, a custom white oak vanity and matching framed mirror continue the design language of the main floor.
A Warm and Timeless Palette
The finished aesthetic is bright modern farmhouse, with white oak providing warmth and texture, soft paint colours keeping the home light and black accents adding contrast.
CPI Interiors also furnished the dining room around the family’s love of entertaining, pairing a statement dining table with soft, sculptural seating.
Why Planning Matters
The project progressed without major construction surprises or significant changes to the scope of work. Major decisions were made before demolition began, creating a clear roadmap for the renovation.

The Finished Result
The kitchen experienced the biggest transformation, evolving from a cramped and isolated space into the heart of the home, but the change extends throughout the house.
The spaces are brighter, the layout is more connected, entertaining is easier and daily routines function better. Most importantly, the home now reflects the warmth and personality of the family who lives there.
The renovation feels natural, as though the home was always meant to work this way.
