O-Train Line 1 ‘may be’ at full capacity by end of May

OC Transpo’s O-Train Line 1 is expected to gradually return to full service by the end of May, following several months of reduced capacity.

Earlier this year, a mechanical issue was identified in a number of trains, prompting transit officials to remove vehicles with more than 100,000 kilometres from service. The problem was linked to defects in cartridge bearing assemblies, a key component affecting train performance and safety.

The reduction in available trains had an immediate impact on service levels. At its lowest point, Line 1 was operating at approximately 70 per cent of its usual capacity during peak periods, resulting in longer wait times and increased crowding for riders.

Since then, OC Transpo has been working with Rideau Transit Group and manufacturer Alstom to address the issue. Efforts have focused on replacing affected components, inspecting additional trains and monitoring performance as vehicles are gradually returned to service.

Transit officials report that capacity has been steadily increasing, with further improvements expected in the coming weeks. A full return to regular service levels is anticipated by the end of May, depending on the continued progress of repairs and testing.

In addition to mechanical issues, weather-related disruptions have also affected service this year. Periods of freezing rain caused damage to overhead power infrastructure, contributing to delays and temporary service interruptions along parts of the line.

While reliability has improved in recent weeks, OC Transpo says the system is still in a recovery phase. Service levels are expected to stabilize as more trains are reintroduced and infrastructure repairs are completed.

For riders, the changes are expected to result in shorter wait times and less crowding as capacity increases. Transit officials say ongoing monitoring will continue to ensure the system returns to consistent and reliable operation.
