Ottawa–Gatineau Aims to Become Canada’s Defence Innovation Hub by 2030

Canada’s capital region is positioning itself to take a leading role in the country’s growing defence and technology sector. A new five-year plan aims to transform Ottawa-Gatineau into Canada’s Defence Innovation Hub, a central place where government, industry, and researchers work together to develop new technologies for national defence and security.

The strategy, led by Invest Ottawa with support from both Ottawa and Gatineau officials, builds on the region’s existing strengths: more than 300 defence, aerospace, and cybersecurity companies, along with major federal research labs and a highly skilled workforce.

In simple terms, the goal is to make the region the go-to destination for defence innovation, where ideas are tested, products are developed, and companies can grow to supply both Canadian and international markets. That could mean new opportunities in fields like cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, communications systems, and advanced manufacturing.

Supporters say the initiative could help diversify the local economy, especially as public service cuts loom, and create thousands of high-value jobs. The plan includes building more research and testing facilities, improving access to government contracts for local firms, and expanding export opportunities.

For the strategy to succeed, consistent funding and cooperation among government, research, and industry partners will be crucial, along with measures to help smaller local firms compete with larger contractors.

Still, many see this as a major step forward. With global security concerns rising, Ottawa-Gatineau’s push to become Canada’s Defence Innovation Hub could help define the region’s future, not just as the home of public servants, but as a centre of high-tech innovation and national resilience.
