What Sandbox VR Actually Is
Sandbox VR, which now has a location at 45 Rideau St. #200 right above the CIBC, opened its first Ottawa branch in December 2025 as part of a chain with more than 40 locations worldwide. Rather than calling their offerings games, staff refer to them as experiences, and after strapping in, it’s easy to see why.
Groups of two to six players suit up with chunky headsets, haptic vests that translate in-game impacts into real vibrations, and ankle and wrist sensors that track movement down to the millisecond. The result is a surprisingly immersive world where your avatar’s hands, legs and weapons all move exactly as yours do.
Choosing Your Adventure
Players can pick from original fantasy worlds or dive into universes built in partnership with Netflix, including Squid Game and Stranger Things. One popular option, Seekers of the Shard: Dragonfire, sends players through misty landscapes battling fire-breathing dragons, oversized skeletons and towering monsters, all while wielding ice-blade powers and a full suit of steel-blue armour.
A typical session runs about half an hour and moves through four or five different worlds. Solo play is available, but staff recommend going in groups, since battling shared enemies alongside friends, family or even strangers tends to make the whole thing far more fun.
Comfort Comes First
Because the headsets can start to feel heavier on the forehead as the half-hour session goes on, staff walk every player through what to expect before they start, and check in partway through to loosen or adjust gear as needed. Tighter vests mean more intense sensations, so players can dial the experience up or down depending on their comfort level.
Afterward, every group receives a free video recap by email, a nice keepsake for birthday parties or date nights looking to relive the moment.
Who’s Booking In
Since opening, Sandbox VR Ottawa has drawn a steady mix of families celebrating birthdays, corporate teams looking for a bonding activity, bachelorette parties and couples on date nights. The shop’s tall storefront windows near the walk from Parliament to the Rideau Centre have helped plenty of curious passersby wander in for a spontaneous session, with walk-ins making up about half of all bookings.
The space stays open as late as 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and staff say late-night groups of ten or more walking in together aren’t unusual. Adults can also unwind at the mini bar, which serves drinks themed to the games, including a Squid Game-inspired lineup.
Planning Your Visit
There’s no strict minimum age, and kids as young as five have taken part, though staff note it often comes down to how well a child’s head fits the headset and how they handle the sensory experience. Pricing runs $55.99 per person Monday through Thursday, rising to $64.99 on weekends.
