Stephane Doucet of Aura Design: A “Smart” Man

When it comes to people accounting for their calling, you often hear about the moment when “the light went on.” For Stephane Doucet of Aura Design, that light was automated. “When I first transitioned from sales to home automation,” Doucet explains, retracing the formative steps of his career path, “I was immediately struck by the transformative potential of the technology: the seamless integration and the impact of convenience.”

The New Brunswick-born Doucet is a proud graduate of Ottawa’s La Cité Collégiale. He studied Computer Programming, learning the foundational languages used in the development and integration of smart home applications. His post-graduate career in sales led to a consultancy for the Stereo Plus Group. There, he was tasked with providing smart home support for the entire franchise—the perfect opportunity to put his collegially-grown talents to work. In 2018, Doucet left to form Aura Design, Ottawa’s leading authority on customized, cutting-edge, and convenient living.

“The ability to optimize home systems to meet individual needs and preferences presented endless possibilities,” the still-passionate Doucet recalls. “I wanted to be part of an industry that was not only innovative but also had the potential to improve people’s lives in meaningful ways.”

Doucet and his team have done just that, helping tech-savvy Ottawans invest in high-end home technology solutions by leading brands like Control4 and Lutron. “Our clients are individuals who love staying ahead with the latest technology and gadgets,” explains Doucet. “They seek to enhance their living spaces with audio, video, and smart devices for convenience, security, and energy efficiency.”

That means that Doucet and his team have to keep on their toes. “The smart home industry is evolving rapidly,” Doucet explains. “Enhanced communication between devices, such as wireless mesh networking and advanced protocols, is making homes more interconnected. There are also innovations in home entertainment, with ultra-large 4K and 8K TVs being better integrated into smart home systems. Small speakers are getting significant upgrades, too, offering high-quality sound in compact designs. Smart lighting systems are allowing for personalized lighting experiences, while smart thermostats and heating systems are improving energy efficiency. Additionally, smart home security systems are becoming more advanced.”

That’s a lot to consider. That’s why homeowners, architects, designers, and builders rely on Aura Design to offer a comprehensive experience, from consultation, design, and budgeting to installation, testing, and support. The installation team, in fact, is renowned for its meticulous attention to detail, while the follow-up team will be available 24/7 starting in the second quarter of 2025. “Aura Design thrives on face-to-face interactions,” says Doucet, “where we answer questions and provide personalized care.” That said, the company is also holding its own online.

To experience the same style epiphany that inspired Doucet to devote his life to the provision of “smart living,” you can book an appointment to visit Aura Design’s legendary showroom in Orleans. The room offers an immersive, hands-on education, allowing prospective clients to explore the full range of Control4’s and Lutron’s capabilities: home theater systems, 4K TVs, high-end audio, smart lighting, climate control, Wi-Fi networking, security camera solutions, and more. Explains Doucet, “It helps demystify the technology and demonstrates its practical benefits.”

In the future, there’ll be more—much more. Aura Design is in the process of expanding its already sizable product line. New industry developments include automated window treatments, coverings that can be controlled remotely via smartphone app or an Alexa or Google assistant. They can be programmed to open and close at specific times or in response to shifts in environmental conditions.

The company also has a bead on such coming innovations as home robotics and various AI-based technologies.

And don’t go thinking that this mode of living is just for moneyed people, luxury homebuilders, and established businesses. Aura Design also offers brands that are more affordable but just as reputable. “For entry-level solutions,” Doucet advises, “we offer brands that strike a good balance between quality and affordability, making them ideal for anyone looking to upgrade their home without opting for the most expensive options.” As further proof of the company’s high regard for its customers, Aura Design offers the same level of installation and follow-up service for these products as it does for its luxury lines.

“Home automation is not just about convenience,” says Doucet. “It’s about creating safer, more efficient, and more comfortable living environments.”
