Study Finds Girl Dads Live Longer

The idea sounds almost too simple to be true. Having daughters might actually help fathers live longer.

But there is research behind it.

A 2006 study published in the American Journal of Human Biology analyzed data from more than 4,300 people, including over 2,100 fathers, to explore how children impact lifespan.
What researchers found stood out. The number of daughters a man had was linked to a measurable increase in longevity, while the number of sons showed no significant effect.

The difference was not small.

On average, each daughter was associated with an increase of about 74 weeks of life, or roughly 1.4 years per daughter.
That means a father with two daughters could, on average, live nearly 3 extra years compared to someone without daughters, based on the study’s findings.

The same pattern did not apply in reverse. For mothers, both sons and daughters were linked to a reduction in lifespan of about 95 weeks per child, highlighting how the biological and social effects of parenting differ by gender.

Researchers did not point to a single cause, but several theories have been proposed.

Some suggest behavioural factors. Fathers with daughters may adopt healthier lifestyles, take fewer risks, or experience different emotional dynamics that influence long-term health. Others point to social support, with daughters often maintaining stronger family connections later in life.

At the same time, the findings come with limits.

The study was based on a specific population and historical data, meaning it does not automatically apply to everyone. More recent research tends to frame the relationship as a “possible link” rather than a guaranteed outcome, with lifestyle, genetics, and environment still playing a much larger role overall.

In that sense, the conclusion is less definitive than it first appears.

Having daughters may be associated with living longer, and the numbers suggest a measurable effect. But it is one factor among many, not a formula for longevity.

Still, it adds an unexpected angle to a familiar idea.

Parenthood changes your life. According to this research, it might even change how long it lasts.
