Is Pomegranate Juice A Superfood?

The ever-growing hype around superfoods has shone the spotlight on a relative newcomer to the health world: pomegranate juice. According to the Institute for Natural Medicine, this antioxidant rich beverage offers a variety of health benefits to those who consume it regularly, with extensive research showing that it can suppress inflammation, inhibit tumour growth, and even prevent breast cancer.

The studies on this superfood powerhouse credit it’s health benefits to the high antioxidant levels in the drink, which fight free radicals in the body that cause inflammation and lead to larger issues like diseases and cancers. Smaller-level studies have also seen that pomegranate juice can be used to effectively slow the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease, as well as prevent obesity, and cardiovascular disease.

There’s debate surrounding whether a supplemental pill can offer the same benefits as the drink, though the limited research on the supplement shows similar results to consuming the juice directly.

While there is no magic number of ounces to drink per day to see the greatest results, studies have shown that anywhere from 2-8oz per day is enough to see significant health benefits.
