On The Bright Side? This Cold Weather Means The Rideau Canal Will Open Soon

While temperatures have dropped to 4-year records this week, the Capital’s recurring cold means that the Rideau Canal Skateway is closer to opening.

According to the NCC, the Canal needs 10-14 consecutive days of freezing temperatures. Currently, most parts of the Canal are frozen, but work is in progress to place/ install equipment, benches, and stands. New this year, there will be space for active recreation alongside the canal, for those who prefer to stay off the ice but still get outside in the downtown area.

The NCC has not set an opening date, but says that they are hopeful it will open soon.
