On The Record: The World According to Kenny B

By Cathryn Wheeler Photography By Sean Sisk

Before the era of TikTok fame and Spotify algorithms, there were DJs—the real kind—who shaped culture one track at a time. Kenny B is one of them. A Toronto kid with an eye for connection and a love for good sound, Kenny rode his bike to Energy 108 just for the chance to sit in the lobby. That tenacity led to a 36-year career behind the mic and on the decks, shaping not only Ottawa’s soundscape but its sense of community.

Known for his long-standing role at HOT 89.9, Kenny’s voice has been part of the daily rhythm for listeners across the city. But behind the mic is someone even more grounded: a wildlife photographer, a self-declared “travel prince,” a cat dad, and a guy who still gets hyped about lunch at Pelican Seafood. In this candid Q&A, Kenny talks early breaks, radio evolution, DJing highs, and the quiet joy of getting the perfect shot—with or without a lens.

Can you tell us about your childhood in Toronto? What sparked your interest in radio and DJing?

When I started in radio, I was just a punk kid fascinated with radio and its involvement with culture and community. I had the opportunity to meet Wayne Williams, a radio DJ at Energy 108 who became my mentor and friend. I asked to check out the station. He said yes, and from there, I rode my bike to the station every day after school and would wait in the lobby for him to show up so I could work with him. It’s important to understand that before the internet or social media, we only had radio and movie stars, so it was a really cool job; we looked up to the radio DJs.

Reflecting on your early career, is there an accomplishment that still holds significant meaning for you today?

I started working at the radio station as the kid putting away the records—yes, I am old enough to have put away records. I would record fake radio shows and get feedback. So, when I got my first opportunity to jump on air, it was a huge accomplishment. I put in so much effort, and it paid off. I will never forget that moment. I was so young, and it felt like I had finally made it. My younger self would have never believed everything we’ve accomplished now.

How has your role at HOT 89.9 evolved since you started, and what do you enjoy most about being part of the HOT 89.9 team?

Technology has changed a lot since my start in radio. We now interact more directly with listeners and the community through texting and social media, which has been a massive shift—but a positive one. The listeners bring me the most enjoyment. I wouldn’t have a gig without the love they show me, and I will keep entertaining them for as long as they have me.

What do you believe are the key elements that make a radio show engaging for listeners?

Being a normal person, keeping high energy, and connecting with the listeners. I don’t want to sound like I’m reading a script or putting on a performance. Radio is a different form of entertainment; it’s connected to local culture and the community it broadcasts. I want to get to know my listeners, deliver information, jokes, news, weather, and tell stories like your friend would.

What advice would you give to aspiring DJs looking to make their mark in the industry?

Every DJ on the radio has a unique style and sound; that’s what you have to bring to the table. But also—be relatable and love what you do.

Who is your favorite celebrity you’ve met, and what made that encounter special?

Tough to narrow that down. I’ve had some incredible moments over the years. I chatted with James Brown and introduced him at a concert. I’ve had drinks with Prince back when I worked in Toronto. I also had the opportunity to meet my favourite group, Jamiroquai. I don’t take any of these moments for granted.

What do you enjoy most about photography, and do you find any parallels between this hobby and your work in radio and DJing?

I don’t have to be Kenny B, the radio guy—I get to be quiet and spend time with my wife and whatever wildlife we photograph. I love learning about the animal’s behaviour and getting that perfect shot. At the end of the day, both my day job and hobby allow me to be creative, and I really enjoy both of them in different ways.

We’d love to hear about your wife—how did you meet? What’s your favorite thing about her?

I met my wife at a work event. I was live on location and chatting with some employees, and we got on the subject of wildlife photography. It’s wonderful when you find a partner who shares a hobby, especially one like that, which takes up most of our spare time.

My absolute favourite thing about her would be her amazing planning skills. I would have never taken these amazing vacations without her. Half the time, I don’t know when we’re leaving or where we’re staying. She calls me a travel prince, hahaha.

You have a cat named Switch. Can you tell us more about him?

Actually, I lost my buddy Switch a few years ago at the age of 22. Since then, we’ve upgraded our house to a three-cat household. We have Bubbles (19 years); my wife moved in with her. Bubbles is her grandmother’s cat, but—to my wife’s discontent—she loves me more. SJ (2 years) is the youngest; she’s loving and a true menace. We recently lost our big boy Baloo and have since adopted a very shy two-year-old named Kylo, who’s adjusting quite well. If you ever want to see pictures, ask me—I’m a proud cat dad, haha.

What advice would you offer to anyone looking to establish themselves in their career?

In general, HARD WORK PAYS OFF. You’ll be told no—so find another way, or another road that makes you happy. They say, “Find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” But I’d add: find something that gives you balance and time to enjoy life, because there’s a big, beautiful world out there.
