Fight Off Your Cold With These 5 Foods

So you couldn’t avoid the dreadful cold – Now what? Once you come into contact with the cold it’s time to help your immune system fight it off. Here are 5 foods that you should work into your daily diet to help get rid of runny noses.

Citrus Fruits

Though these fruits aren’t proven to prevent colds exactly, they have been known to help minimize the duration of a cold. Turn that 7-day cold into a 5-day by indulging in some Vitamin C. So cut open the grapefruit for breakfast and work some lemon into your daily water intake and hopefully you’ll notice a quicker recovery!

Chicken Noodle Soup

You’ve probably already thought of this one but it is no myth, chicken soup is a great food to have when you’re feeling sick! Not only can chicken noodle be packed with nutrients but it is also a good source of fluid. When you’re sick it’s important to have larger quantities of nutrients as well as fluid to help fight off those awful fevers.

Ginger

Ginger is a great food to add to your diet as it has proven to settle stomachs and relieve nausea, this is why you can often find Gravol that contains ginger. Not only does it help with nausea but it also acts as a natural anti-inflammatory which is beneficial during a cold. Mixing in some ginger with your soup can be a perfect way to add it into your meals.

Salmon

Wild salmon is an amazing source of vitamin D which can also help minimize the duration of a cold. With the time change taking place last week we are now experiencing less amounts of sun, therefore not as much Vitamin D. In order to help our bodies get that extra bit it’s important to mix in some nutrient rich foods, like salmon, that can help us fight off our colds quicker!

Garlic

Garlic is packed with antiviral, antibiotic and antiseptic properties that are essential in fighting off colds. There are many remedies that involve taking a spoonful of garlic or mixing it into a drink, however for a less potent solution you could try mixing it into chilis or soups. Eating raw garlic has proven to be very effective however the downfall is that you may have to deal with bad breath – just a small price to pay to get rid of that cold!
