4 Things You Can Do At Home To Protect Yourself From Coronavirus

With news that the Coronavirus has begun to spread across North America, it is important to be prepared and educated on steps you can take to lower your risk and hopefully help to stop the spread of the virus.

Here are 4 things you can do today to reduce your risk:

Make Sure You Are Washing Your Hands Effectively

We all know that washing our hands is one of the best things we can do to stop the spread of germs, but is your hand washing up to snuff? Proper hand washing lasts for no less than 20 full seconds, and reaches every area of importance; including the back of your hands, between your fingers and fingertips, under your fingernail and your wrists. A study published in the Journal of Environmental Health found that a staggering 95% of people don’t wash their hands correctly. So, as long as you take the time to reach all of those areas and lather with soap, you’ll be in the top 5%.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking water helps to support your natural immune function by removing toxins that could keep your system busy. Cutting down on your alcohol consumption can also help to keep your immune system on par. Drinking alcohol excessively has been shown to weaken the immune system and make you more susceptible to viruses.

Support Your Immune System

Try to eat foods that boost your immune system. Citrus and cruciferous vegetables great for immune health, as is Omega-3.

Out of these three key sources of immune strength, most people do not get enough Omega-3 in their daily diet. Omega-3 fatty acids (always look for a complete Omega-3 supplement with DPA, EPA and DHA) can help to boost the immune system by enhancing the functioning of immune cells, which may improve your ability to fight off colds and viruses.

Minimize the Risk of Germs at Home

The government of Canada has identified 7 places in the home that should be sanitized frequently:

  • toys
  • toilets
  • phones
  • electronics
  • door handles
  • bedside tables
  • television remotes

Having anti-bacterial solutions or wipes in your main entrance will also remind you to sanitize your hands and phone before entering your home, limiting the spread of outside germs.
